RETHINKING PEDAGOGY FOR AN INCLUSIVE 21st CENTURY SCHOOL
Rethinking pedagogy for an inclusive 21st century school is a project designed to turn the school up-side-down in order to give it a fresh start and create a welcoming environment where students can actively experiment, plan, and be in charge of their learning. The knowledge society requires that everyone becomes a lifelong learner and keeps updated to keep up with a constantly changing labour market and society. It’s a school’s mission to provide its students with the skills and competences with which to earn a living work and integrate into society.
In details the specific objectives are:
- changing the learning environment
- spreading new teaching methods
- making inclusion the distinguishing feature of the school
- tackling early school leaving and sustaining motivation
- training teachers to work in collaboration with the local community and significant stakeholders
- fostering entrepreneurship through education
- internationalizing the school
The participants to the project will be the head teacher and both trained (3) and to be trained teachers (10) who will have different functions in the project:
- the trained teachers together with the head teacher will have the task of coordinating the activities of the working group;
- implementing learner-centred activities in their classes to set an example;
- helping colleagues to plan and test activities in their classes;
- acting as mentors;
- creating contacts with relevant stakeholders;
- evaluating the training path and its results;
- disseminating the results.
The teachers to be trained will start adopting the new teaching approaches (CLIL, Project-Based Learning, Flipped Classroom..) and involve other teachers of the selected classes in the process of innovation creating interdisciplinary activities.
The participants will also be selected to attend onsite courses at the Future Classroom Lab – European Schoolnet in Brussels according to the subject taught, and the theme of the course. The Headteacher will attend two courses related to her function.
As a result of the project implementation, the participants will:
- deepen their knowledge concerning methodological approaches that help students develop team working , problem solving, critical thinking and entrepreneurial skills. This will be made possible through the preparatory activities and the attendance of on-site courses;
-be offered practical examples of how learner–centred methodologies can be adopted in the classes and of how to get the best from them;
- set up a new educational environment for their classes based on interdisciplinary work in collaboration with other colleagues in charge of the class. This will also help spread the new teaching approaches;
- work in a highly–motivating environment under the guidance of expert teacher trainers at European Schoolnet;
- collaborate with colleagues from different parts of Europe , share ideas and compare the different education systems. This will give them the opportunity to grasp useful ideas that may help improve the teaching practice and learning environment in the school;
- improve their L2 and ICT skills. To participate to the onsite courses at least a B1/B2 level of English is required, so the participants will have to update to reach the said required level or consolidate it. Intermediate level of ICT tools usage is also complementary in the implementation of the new methodological approaches which embed technology as a must – be element to be included in education to respond to the needs of today’s society.
To sum up participants will enhance their motivation and use the acquired competences to plan innovative interdisciplinary modules working in teams, therefore arranging their methodology according to this new knowledge and experiences.
The expected impact on participants is a broad and coherent understanding of learner – centred methodologies. The school will have a wider range of teachers capable of creating modules not only in their respective subject but also in collaboration with the team of colleagues that work on a class according to an interdisciplinary perspective.
It is envisaged a positive effect on learners as well in terms of better acquisition of 21st century skills, entrepreneurial mindset and enhanced motivation.
This will contribute to reduce the rate of early school leaving so that they will have better chances to succeed in the labour market as well as in higher education.

Our History
In the last few years the institute has been endowed with some of the most updated technology and has become digital, the Headteacher would like the renewal to go hand in hand with methodological innovation on a large scale. In the past experimentation had been confined to two or three classes until the implementation of the Erasmus+ project S.M.I.L.E. https://erasmussmile.jimdo.com/ that saw the involvement of five classes and large collaboration among teachers. The good practice offered by the said project has convinced the Headteacher that is the way to go to give new life to the school.
